BEGINNINGS 1999

One of the very last characters I tried my hand at during the original run (September 1996 through February 1999), LASERBEAK was a rare one-take icon successful enough back then for me to accept on the first try. I felt no details really needed to be retouched. I based it on a sketch especially intended for avatar reference that turned out surprisingly well. So, a bit like a really good song demo makes for an even better finished recording, the better the sketch, the better the pixel icon.

SECOND WIND 2008 - 2009

LASERBEAK was also one of the last characters I updated during the 2007-'08 run. It had been my idea to complete all pre-movie characters by the end of the first year and the rest during the second, but some of them had to be postponed. Anyway, I used to think it the new take showed the younger me up for the limited skills I had before, but given how animalistic Transformers are more difficult to draw by their very nature, I feel differently now. I did what I could -- and short of a vector graphics version, I expect I will not have to update LASERBEAK beyond the latest embellishment.
