The Arctibot Evolution by Trecathlus The Arctibot Evolution by Trecathlus
In March of 2000, I conceived this combiner team as a response to the fact that the Autobots have so relatively few of them compared to the Decepticons. In the U.S. TV series, the Decepticons have five over only three Autobot teams -- and if we include other continuities, the imbalance is even more pronounced -- so I thought it would be nice not only to even the score a bit, but to introduce a polar group as well.

That seemed like maybe the last sort of unexplored habitat for a combiner team:

The Constructicons / Infrastructural Engineering
The Stunticons / The Road
The Aerialbots / The Sky
The Combaticons / The Battlefield
The Protectobots / Infrastructural Protection
The Predacons / The Jungle
The Terrorcons / Anywhere!
The Technobots / Outer Space

And from the Japanese continuity:

The Seacons / The Ocean

Possibly a mountain team would be in order, too?

While designing the Arctibot constituents, I discovered that someone had already invented an "Arcticon" team, one of whose members bore the name of BLIZZARD, my first (and perhaps too obvious) choice for WHITEOUT. Another Arcticon was called SNOWCONE, which also very much resembled STORMCONE, STORM CENTER's initial moniker. Of all the names I am most pleased with WIND CHILL. I still feel that is a good and strong leader type name.

There is actually an additional iteration of five of them (all but AVALANCHE) that was done in the winter of 2001, but those changes are so minor as to be close to undetectable, so I decided to omit them.

Each Arctibot will be described more fully under their individual postings. It is quite enjoyable to design personalities as well as the way they look and try to come up with a workable whole; a fully realized character. It must have been a lot of fun working on the original characters back in the day!

I've always appreciated this own OC Autobot combiner/gestalt of yours Rik!
The thought of a ice combiner sub-group team for the Autobots is a great idea and choice since we never had any characters that specialized in that area of expertise.
Their designs are creative enough to make them unique looking while seeing the influences you took from original G1 characters which is a cool nod!
The colour schemes are appealing and so fun to marvel at as it has positive Autobot feel to them.
The names all sound fantastic and it reflects function roles well.
I would love to see when its ready you the gestalt Polarion head design, I'm sure it turn out just fine as these have!
Overall splendid creations, I hope to see you continue this again!

Hi, JP!

I'm flattered that you like this so much. It's a great affirmation to know that you could see the G1-ness that
I strove for in creating them -- and even without, as you say, making any of them look too much like original
characters (I suppose Avalanche might have a bit of Prowl in there; that crest is very distinctive and Prowl
made it so identifiable with himself that it can be a hard detail to transcend).

I have very vague ideas for their bodies, but I must admit to struggling with "seeing" how their vehicles would
naturally -- and stylishly -- fold out into their robot modes. But the future is still a long time, so we shall see. :-)

Hi Rik!

It sure could which I love!

I see, well all the best making it happen one day!

My mistake on Polarion, I see him clearly designed, silly me!

Wow that's cool, but the Decepticons still have the Autobots outnumbered in combiners, if you count my fan created combiner, Vandalizer. ;)

And even if I don't count it, the Deceps outnumber the Autos. ;-)

The Cons love their combiners. XD

If they could, they would ALL combine into a Unicron sized gestalt. LOL
Trecathlus Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
What a MESS that would be!
FirebirdTomonaga Featured By Owner Apr 10, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
Yes it would, with ALL those personalities merging. The gestalt would end up paralyzed or something.

I always appreciate a well-developed OC and I gotta say these look very promising. I'm looking forward to see more and detailed work on them.

Hey, PaperBerry!

Thank you very much for the feedback. I must admit that I never quite pictured their robots modes, though I do have ideas for what kind of alternate forms they're to have. I'm also not sure I'd be able to draw them very well, but maybe one day... :-)

From the art and description, I was guessing about three of them to be a snowmobile, the other two perhaps being boats or aircrafts (helicopters or seaplanes). ^^ What are your ideas then?

Well, this couldn't be called a quick response by any means, but it was necessary for me to deliberate over some details before I got back to you. These head designs are really all I've properly developed; their bodies are still vaguely formed in my mind.

Anyway, the process of deciding on vehicular modes has been a long one. I obviously want to be original, which is challenging within the limited range of snow vehicles. But I can't be too eclectic, either, since each member must have an alternate mode conducive to their functions and convincing and workable as key components of their combined mode. So here are my latest ideas (subject to possible change):

Wind Chill -- Hind D helicopter
Duly powerful for a leader and a good fit as Polarion's torso, with the rotor as a weapon on his back

Avalanche -- Snow Tank
Aggressive mode for an aggressive character; much like Combaticon Brawl, this would make a good leg for Polarion

Glacier -- Silent-track Snow Scooter
Suitable enough for reconnaissance and a fair choice for one of Polarion's arms

Storm Center -- Armoured Multi-passenger Snowmobile
A reinforced alpine ambulance; its size should make for a good second leg

Whiteout -- Sno-Cat
Good for negotiating difficult terrain; has potential as second arm, not unlike Constructicon Scavenger

Interesting choices, especially that the team's leader is the team's flyer. I don't recall any of the canon combiners having a flyer as leader (including the Aerialbots in a way).

Hmm, they look like a well-balanced group and the alt-mode choices work nicely with their job descriptions, as well as that I can picture them forming a gestalt together.

So next up we can expect their character profiles and the rest of their designs?
Trecathlus Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2008  Hobbyist General Artist
Glad you like the choices. They were, as I said, a lot of work. But then again, challenging often equals satisfying, doesn't it?

I don't know if "next up" will entail anything to do with the Arctibots, but yes, profiles will definitely come one day. Full designs... I'll have to see about. That's daunting to me. Still, I guess walls are mostly there for those who don't have a strong enough desire to achieve whatever goal they might want to set for themselves, so here's to wanting it enough!
